Inspiration - Lace Dresses

I'm not often one to follow trends but, I have to admit, I can't help but to give a little grin when I see that the newest "it" look just happens to fall in line with my plans.

This morning I received an email from Bloomingdale's that gave me one of those little grins.  Apparently, lace dresses are one of the looks for fall.  Fantastic!  I made one last year but, as I mentioned during Me-Made-May, it doesn't get much wear, owing to it's bridal color.  I do like the idea, however, so for the last month or so, I've been working on a plan for a new one.  I've purchased the lace and the base fabric.  Now, I just need the dye and a few notions.  I'm really hoping to get this one whipped up before we move.

In the meantime, let's drool over some of the latest designer offerings, shall we?

Madison Marcus Short Dress
The lace on this one is not entirely dissimilar to what is sold at the chain fabric shops here but, I do really like how they've used an interesting scallop detail on the low back.

Tadashi Shoji Peplum Dress
Lace and a peplum!?  Need I say more?

Adrianna Papell One Shoulder Dress
I love this grey this year and the lace is a little different, in a good way.  But, one shoulder dresses have never been a good look for me.

Tadashi Shoji Lace Dress
The 3/4 sleeves*, narrow v-neckline, and wrapped style of this scalloped dress immediately said vintage to me.

ML Monique Lhuillier Strapless Dress

A little glamour anyone?  So not a practical dress (for me anyway!) but, I think the way they achieved the look is interesting.  This is actually a very simple strapless gown.  To make it unique, wide strips of lace were added to a black tulle overlay.

Aqua Cinch Waist Dress
Or, if you're not yet ready to take on a full dress of lace, be it due to style or sewing preferences, here's a simple pullover dress with an elastic waist and just a strip of girlish lace gracing the hem.  And, it's navy.  Who doesn't love navy!?

And finally, I couldn't help throwing this piece in:

Burberry London Sherfield Lace Trench
I adore Burberry trench coats and this one is a lovely blend of feminine lace with the traditional/masculine military features.

*To sleeve, or not to sleeve?  I'm constantly going back and forth over whether or not to add sleeves to my own lace dress.  Care to weigh in?

What do you think?  Will you be jumping on the coming season's lace trend?

Happy sewing! x

  1. The dress you made is gorgeous, maybe you could try bringing two trends together & dye it ombre to get more wear??

  2. So lovely! I saw a lace blazer in the mall last week and *very* nearly bought it, it was so lovely. I've always loved lace but it's never been fashionable - hooray for the new trend!

    2. A lace blazer - i love that idea! I'd probably want it to be lined so it wasn't completely sheer.

I also love that blue dress at the top and the deep V at the back. My wedding dress also had lace. I really love when the edges of the lace are used at the edges of the garment. Maybe I can do something like navy dress with the lace trim. Cute and wearable for every day!

    3. I agree a lined lace blazer would be great. That way it's pretty and functional.

The navy dress is a great choice! (In fact, if my queue ever stops growing, I may just add it to my list.) Definitely wearable!

  3. Hehe - I just acquired some lace intended for a dress for this very reason! Although we're still a few months away from having weather warm enough to make such a creation... I'm planning to dye mine too, as the lace I wanted is an off-cream colour... I want something brighter!
I can't decide on to sleeve or not either... the pattern I'm using has both. I might do a sleeve to see what it looks like, then decide!

    1. Ooo, I can't wait to see what you make!! Have you decided on a color?

That's a good idea. I think I'll go ahead and make sleeves too and then decide.

  4. I wasn't quite ready for lace, so I found some silk gauze and lined that to make a lace inspired dress using McCalls 6505. I love the Aqua Cinch dress above, it's not too dressy which lace dresses can be. Mm, methinks I could make something similar! Your own lace dress is gorgeous, but I can see your predicament with colour!

    1. Thanks, Nikki! Your dress is certainly gorgeous too!! The silk you chose is the perfect alternative to lace. I'd love to see your take on the Aqua Cinch dress :-)
